El concepto de una "cultura de la paz" fue formulada en el Congreso Internacional sobre la Paz en la Mente de los Hombres, que tuvo lugar en Côte d'Ivoire en 1989. El Congreso recomendó que la UNESCO ayude a construir una nueva visión de la paz mediante el desarrollo de una cultura de paz basada en los valores universales de respeto a la vida, la libertad, la justicia, la solidaridad, la tolerancia, los derechos humanos y la igualdad entre hombres y mujeres ".

The concept of a ‘culture of peace’ was formulated at the International Congress on Peace in the Minds of Men, held in Côte d’Ivoire in1989.

More than ever before, culture has a vital role to play in international relations. Cultural enables us to appreciate points of commonality and, where there are differences, to understand the motivations and humanity that underlie them.

Sustainable development means meeting the needs of today (food, shelter, employment, etc.) without compromising the ability of future generations to also meeting those same needs. In a world where resources are running low, attention sustainable development must be incorporated into all aspects of our lives. For example, the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014) aims to integrate the principles, values and practices that can fulfil the world’s present needs without compromising the future of humankind, into all aspects of education and learning.

According to the ILO, 160 million people in the world today are unemployed, and many more subsist on the margins of the economy or have jobs that do not provide them with adequate means to ensure their survival. Furthermore, youth unemployment is at an all-time high: nearly 40% of those without work are young people and levels of unemployment tend to be two to three times higher for this group than for the adult population.

Gender equality is not only a basic human right, but its achievement has enormous socio-economic ramifications. Empowering women fuels thriving economies, spurring productivity and growth.

Literacy is a fundamental prerequisite for peace. It empowers individuals to make informed choices, which impact their families and their communities. It contributes to democracy by enabling effective participation in the policy process, and it increases mutual understanding through encouraging debate and dialogue. In today’s knowledge driven societies, lack of literacy is more than ever synonymous with exclusion and marginalization.
