Global Cyber Ambassador for Peace (GCAP)

The e Worldwide Group (eWWG) partnered with UNESCO in 2011 to create a platformfor a dialogue for the ‘Global Cyber Ambassadors for Peace’ (GCAP), using ICTs andCyberspace. We believe that only through dialogue, can the world achieve a globalvision of sustainable development, encompassing observance of human rights, mutualrespect and the alleviation of poverty, all of which are at the heart of UNESCO’s andeWWG’s mission and activities. The ‘Youth-led’ GCAPs are focusing on empowering young people across the world, particularly in post-conflict and post-disaster countries. Our objective is to promoteunderstanding, respect, peace and harmony, transcending faith, gender, race, culture, and class. This is achieved through creating a global conversation across a wide rangeof platforms innovatively using ICTs and cyberspace. We have established a LivingNetwork of GCAPs’ consisting of young digital citizens from around the world, enablingthem to engage in constructive, practical and interactive discussions, thus organicallycreating a Bridge of Trust. These international GCAPs are operating across 2 levels: Schools and Universities (insome cases separately for boys and girls, based on the local customs). They arecreating a ‘global conversation’ across the young digital natives. This is enabling theGCAPs to jointly create interactive guidebooks, checklists and toolkits that focus on the 2distinct age groups in multiple areas. Their work is targeting areas that they havepersonally identified to be critical for them to safely engage with cyberspace ie.

  • Code of Conduct for Safety and Security
  • Code of Conduct for Ethics
  • Code of Conduct for Understanding and Respect
  • Code of Conduct for Peace and Harmony
  • The Bill of Rights for the Digital Citizens

Our research has shown that the ‘Young’ are most innovative and we will never truly beable to anticipate and keep up with their creative ‘moves and applications’. Thereforewe are also creating regional “Champions” who will be members of the GCAP steeringcommittee, to share their ‘views and thoughts’ on the strategic direction from youngperson’s perspective. This network allows us to understand the ‘evolving threats’ and most importantly‘monitor the ‘tell-tell signs’ of inappropriate behaviors and actions’ in cyber space. Webelieve that this will enable proactive steps to be taken to prevent cyber threats at anational and global level. Moreover, this intervention will be able to influence thedevelopment of effective policies in the context of international ‘Cyberspace Security’
